Paris Saint-Germain enters the field of competitive Rainbow Six: Siege in Japan by signing a new team.

PSG Signs New R6 Team

The synergy between traditional sports and esports is becoming more and more evident as traditional sports clubs are fielding esports teams. The latest team sponsored by a large sports organization is Paris Saint-Germain’s new Rainbow Six: Siege squad. The team will be joining the Rainbow Six Japan League, which is organized by NTT Docomo.

“The Japanese esports scene is one of the most dynamic in the world and we are proud today to join the family,” said Paris Saint-Germain Brand Director Fabien Allègre. “Rainbow 6 is a new type of game that we had not explored yet. It is an exciting time for the PSG esports section.”

Allègre mentioned that PSG’s esports network has grown a lot in only five years. “We run teams in France, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bangkok, and now Tokyo. We are looking forward to building new successes in the coming years.”

Managing Director Asia Pacific, Paris Saint-Germain, Sebastien Wasels explained the decision why the organization decided to launch its new R6: Siege team in Japan. “Over the years, Paris Saint-Germain has developed a special bond with Japanese fans, and we are delighted to open a new chapter of our history entering Rainbow 6 Japan League,” he said.

Wasels also mentioned that since PSG opened its first in Japan in 2018, Paris Saint-Germain has dramatically increased its presence on the archipelago. “We already have 3 official boutiques, 2 in Tokyo, 1 in Nagoya, and more is to come in the coming months!” he added.

PSG’s New Team and the R6: Siege League in Japan

Paris Saint-Germain’s new R6: Siege squad comes just before the start of the Rainbow Six Japan League, which will kick off on March 26. This is the league’s second official year, and it has expanded to ten professional teams, up from eight in 2021. Later this year there will also be a Rainbow Six Japan Championship 2022 where the champion will be crowned the best team in Japan.

The PSG roster is currently unknown, however, the official announcement stated that it would have “five Japanese players based in Kanagawa, Hokkaido, Okinawa, and Osaka”. The squad will be one of the ten teams competing in the second year since the league came to Japan.

Last year, the Japan League, Japan Championship, and Japan Open tournaments offered ¥52,000,000 ($439,000). Additionally, ¥32,000,000 (approximately $270,000) were guaranteed in player salary on offer to all Japan League teams. It’s safe to say PSG is entering a profitable esport.
