  • Fans have noticed that the Torghast initiation questchain is now missing
  • This makes no sense because it leaves a huge chunk of the story unexplained
  • New players will need to rely on third-party sources to learn the full story

World of Warcraft Shadowlands has removed an important questchain from the game, much to the dismay of players.

WoW Removes the Torghast Initiation Questchain

World of Warcraft Shadowland players have been surprised to find that the 9.1 Chains of Domination patch has ended up removing and entire main story quest chain. According to Reddit user Lenestar, this is a fully undocumented change that was never announced to players.

The storyline in question is the hero’s initial exploration of Torghast, the Tower of the Damned. In the story beforehand, the player character arrives in the Maw. The Jailer then captures the faction leaders of the Alliance and the Horde one, with only the player slipping unscathed. The character then earns the title of Maw Walker and begins a quest to free the captured leaders.

Once the player has completed the covenant quest chain, they are introduced to Torghast, the Jailer’s fortress. There, players have to explore numerous randomly-generated floors, filled to the brim with enemies, in order to free Baine, Thrall and Jaina. Only that this isn’t the case anymore.

Since 9.1’s release, this entire questline has apparently been scrapped. No longer does the player need to manually save the leaders – now they automatically appear in Oribos, the expansion’s main hub. When speaking with them, the Maw Walker learns that apparently they’ve been “saved by another Maw Walker.”

New Players Will Have a Chunk of the Story Missing

This change baffled fans as it obviously means that new players will have no idea what’s going on. The removal of the Torghast questchain means that Shadowlands newcomers won’t even get to experience the masterfully-crafted cinematics featuring Sylvanas and Anduin.

WoW players are bewildered by this nonsensical decision and to them, it seems like Blizzard has shot itself in the foot once again. Not only does this take away the enjoyment but it also adds a form of “gatekeeping” to the game’s storyline. Shadowlands newcomers will now need to hit YouTube if they want to have a complete grasp on what’s going on.

Blizzard’s whimsical decision definitely spoils a portion of the game but it might not be completely baseless. When Shadowlands first dropped some people weren’t exactly thrilled by the grindy nature of Torghast and the Maw as a whole. To many, it seemed more like a chore than an exciting gaming experience. Additionally, Blizzard may have also wanted to make it quicker for newly-created characters to reach the new 9.1 Chains of Domination content.

Perhaps the company wanted to relieve players from needless grinding and spending a lot of time doing something that not everyone considers fun? Who knows? Even if this were the case, removing a crucially-important questline definitely isn’t the best way to go about it.
