NY Fury Rebuilds VALORANT Roster, Parts Ways with Most Players

in Valorant
April 6, 2022
  • The organization moves two players to its inactive roster and releases two more
  • Only in-game leader Chad “Oderus” Miller remains on the team’s active roster
  • This is all part of NY Fury’s parent organization restructuring

With only two stages of Challengers events during this year’s VCT circuit before Champions remaining, NY Fury is undergoing massive changes.

NY Fury Benches Most of its Roster

Major roster changes amid important series are rare but it still happens from time to time. VALORANT is one game that has its teams changed up a lot it seems. For example, recently FNATIC suspended one of its pros over controversial statements regarding Ukraine.

However, the latest large VALORANT team change is fortunately not so controversial, but it’s still large. New York Fury, the VALORANT division of the NYXL esports, announced it has released or benched most of its players ahead of a major restructuring.

Dayton “Lear” Aka and Jonard “Jonaaa6” Penaflor were the two players that parted ways with the team. They were also NYF’s newest signings, joining the organization only this past January. In the meantime, veteran members Daniel “vice” Kim and Anthony “mummAy” DiPaolo have been moved to the inactive roster, while making them available for transfer.

The only remaining active player from NYF’s previous roster is in-game leader Chad “Oderus” Miller. He is a VALORANT veteran with experience playing for teams like Dignitas, Pioneers, and Version1. Oderus will supposedly be kept on during NYF’s rebuilding phase because there is a short supply and high demand for IGLs in NA.

Matt “Warden” Dickens, the team’s coach, said on Twitter that he enjoyed working with every team member, reminding everyone that they will make a great addition to their future teams.

I really enjoyed working with all of these players. Any team would be lucky to have them. Sometimes bigger shake ups are needed for every one to find success. https://t.co/ZhWDf2pnbs

Andbox Restructuring under NYXL

New York Fury is owned by the New York-based esports organization Andbox, which was recently rebranded to NYXL. The organization also plans to invest millions of dollars into the New York City gaming community over the next 12 months.

NYF’s major roster changes come as a part of the overall restructuring of the team’s parent organization. NYXL will also create its new headquarters in Manhattan, which will be named XLHQ, and the launch of YXL, which is a new program called the Young Creator Project.

CCO Mitchell Smith said in a press release that the organization is dedicated to building New York’s esports programs, discovering new creators, and creating new content and entertainment that showcase the city. “We see NYXL and esports as an important step in growing New York’s economy and we are excited to build this sector and create large-scale events that bring people from around the world into the City,” he explained.
