Valve announced that they will stop support for the 32-Bit version of Dota 2. The company believes this will improve and streamline its other services.

There Will Be No Further Support for 32-Bit Systems

With the International 2021 Compendium now live, Valve announced the postponing of a big update surrounding ticket sales. Dota 2’s client Spectator HUD will be receiving new features. Along with this, the company also made another important announcement – they will be removing support for older systems and configurations. Players with 32-bit systems will no longer be able to play the game on their machines.

It is still unknown when the new “killer” update will come, but we do know that the studio wants to remove support for older systems. In their statement here, you can learn more about the International 2021 Compendium, and also about their future plans for the 32-Bit version of the game, but here is a small list of the most important changes:

  • Remove support for Dota on 32-bit systems. You will need to have a 64-bit machine and OS to run Dota.
  • Remove support for macOS versions below 10.14.
  • Remove support for DirectX 9. Customers using DirectX 9 will instead switch to DirectX 11.
  • Remove support for OpenGL. Customers using OpenGL will instead switch to Vulkan.
  • Remove support for XAudio (-xaudio) and switch to using SDL Audio (-sdlaudio).

What Can Players Expect?

In their latest news update, Valve said that the majority of players do not need to worry, because the new changes will only affect gamers with older systems. They say that the vast majority of players are already benefiting from newer technologies, whether it’s via larger content sizes, higher frame rates, better graphical fidelity, or cleaner-sounding audio.

According to Valve the reason behind removing these older technologies is to let them streamline their development efforts as well as use newer features of the APIs.

The studio also encourages that players try out the new APIs and report any problems they might encounter. We are still waiting for more information on the matter but it is clear that the older version of the game is going in favor of a newer, potentially more streamlined experience.
