  • The squad takes home the trophy of the biggest Dota 2 tournament of the year
  • Spirit also leaves the event with the grand prize of $1.4 million
  • This is the second time that Team Spirit has won a The International event

Following a successful run throughout the 2023 DPC, Team Spirit went up against Gaimin Gladiators at TI12’s grand finals and defeated them 3-0 to claim the event’s top spot.

Spirit Win TI12

Team Spirit’s success at TI12 makes the squad two-time champions, as they previously won the competition in 2021. The team lifted the trophy above their heads after a spectacular 3-0 match against Gaimin Gladiators in the event’s finals. Along with the ovations of the public, Spirit also take home the grand prize of over $1.4 million.

“The path to victory has always been challenging and demanding. This season, we took on a tremendous responsibility and worked on every aspect of our game. There were failures and difficulties at the beginning, but we never gave up. Every win and even every loss taught us something. After winning Riyadh Masters and DreamLeague Season 20, we became a stronger and more unified team,” a statement by the organization reads.

“We want to thank each one of you who believed in us and supported our team on this journey. Your energy and faith helped us to secure the second Aegis and become champions of The International 12. We love you!”

Team Spirit used the Riyadh Masters as fuel for their run throughout TI12, quickly becoming one of the event’s favorites. Meanwhile, Gaimin Gladiators were looking to pull off the grand slam after winning all three DPC Majors throughout the year. With such performances by both teams throughout 2023, it should come as no surprise that they finally met at the end of the biggest Dota 2 event of the year.

How Did The Match Go?

The match was somewhat unusual, as the first game saw strange picks with Gyrocopter and Beastmaster both being chosen. The former had not won a single game at TI after being picked five times, while the latter only had a 27% win rate at the tournament. Despite that, Team Spirit’s Beastmaster carried them to a relatively quick win over GG.

Game Two saw the teams revert to more familiar picks with Spirit’s Magomed “Collapse” Khalilov choosing Magnus. This combination was crucial in the team’s 2021 victory and this year it was the same, as Spirit once again won to lead the match 2-0.

With a lot resting on the outcome of game three, both teams settled on meta picks that have been proven in this year’s TI. Spirit had CK, Grimstroke, Tusk, and Spirit Breaker, while GG took Meurta, the most picked hero at the tournament, along with Pango and AA. This resulted in GG taking the early lead which they held up until the mid-game, but a few big fights turned the rides of battle which eventually led to Spirit taking home the first place.

Team Spirit’s victory marks the end of a year-long redemption ark. Last year, the squad’s performance was not good, so much so that in-game leader Miposhka criticized its performance. However, it seems that Spirit have used the time since then to train hard, which has had the intended results.

With TI12 concluded, fans and organizations alike have some time to rest and reorganize before the start of the 2023/2024 DPC.
