Asmongold has spoken about his views on Square Enix’s intentions of getting into the Metaverse and NFTs.
Zack Criticizes the Metaverse
While the famous streamer Zack “Asmongold” has been enjoying his time on Final Fantasy 14, he was quick to point out his disagreement with the game’s developers, Square Enix, as soon as the company announced its intentions to get into the Metaverse and NFTs.
As someone who is known to be upfront and earnest, Asmongold bashed the idea, calling it a corporate way to control people’s lives.
“I think that you, your brother, your friend, the people you went to high school with; those people aren’t really talking a whole lot about the Metaverse,” Asmongold proclaimed during a livestream on his secondary channel, zackrawrr.
“The main people who are pushing the idea of a Metaverse are the corporate overlords that are looking to sequester and segment away more autonomy of your personal life away from you and into the realm that they can control that is now being called the Metaverse.”
Asmongold urged his viewers to stay vigilant and not fall victim to the corporate language of such companies.
Blockchain Tech Is Interesting But NFTs Are Not, According to Asmongold
The content creator also wanted a word on NFTs and Square Enix’s plans to push them. Zack, an avid opponent of the idea of buying a picture for thousands of dollars, elaborated on his views.
According to what he said, Asmongold actually thinks that the blockchain technology behind NFTs is really interesting. “It’s kind of like the idea of a printer is amazing. Like, oh wow, you can print something out, you don’t need to have a printing press anymore – it’s just a digital printer.”
However, that, in itself, is not enough to make NFTs worth it. “But when a digital printer prints out a picture of a banana, it’s not worth anything. All you have is a sheet of paper with a banana of it.”
Thousands Share the Streamer’s Sentiments
Asmongold isn’t the only one feeling strongly about Square Enix’s announcement. The whole community has been quite disgruntled by the company’s aggressive pushing of the Metaverse and NFTs.
Some begrudgingly pointed out that the company barely had wished anyone a “Happy New Year” before starting to babble about NFTs.
Square Enix isn’t the first company that has decided to adopt NFTs nor is it the first one facing criticism for it. Recently Discord and GSC Game World tried to get into NFTs as well but were quickly dissuaded from doing so by the angry crowd.
