  • Riot Games is keen on creating a competitive VALORANT ecosystem in China
  • This is why it partnered with ten teams to create a separate VCT league in the region
  • One more team will become a partner through the VALORANT China Ascension 2023 event

A total of eleven organizations will kickstart the VALORANT competitive scene in China with a special event in February.

Riot Announces Partners

Partnered teams have always been important for developing esports ecosystems and Riot Games knows this very well. The company has recently been investing more and more efforts into creating a stable VALORANT community in China with plans already on the table for a competitive VALORANT circuit for 2024.

This comes in the form of the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) 2024 Masters Shanghai, a series, more details of which will be released in the next weeks. Furthermore, Riot Games also revealed that China would get its own separate VCT league. All of this was timed with the release of VALORANT in China earlier this fall. Riot even revealed the newest agent Iso to celebrate the occasion.

Of course, all of this needs teams to actually play the game and Riot Games has recently revealed which organizations it has partnered with in order to create a stable competitive base in the region. These are: Nova Esports, JD, Gaming, Trace Esports, Wolves Esports, FunPlus Phoenix, All Gamers, BilBili Gaming, EDward Gaming, Titan Esports Club, and TYLOO.

This selection will essentially kickstart the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) China campaign when it begins in February with the aptly named VCT 2024: China Kick-Off tournament. The top two teams from the event will qualify for the VCT Madrid Masters, the first international event of the year, which is scheduled to take place in March.

It should be noted that there will actually be eleven partnered teams in total, instead of the usual ten. Apart from the ones listed here, the last organization to be granted the coveted partner status will be decided through the VALORANT China Ascension 2023 event. This Tier-2 event kicks off on 23rd December.

However, for now, we can look at the ten certain teams and try to get a picture of what the Chinese league would look like. One organization that stands out a lot is EDward Gaming, which has been a stellar team and has been shining in several international events, such as VTC 2023 Masters Tokyo. EDG was also the first VALORANT team from China that qualified for an international VALORANT tournament in 2022 when it competed in VALORANT Champions 2022.

Creating a brand new VCT League in China is a huge undertaking on the part of Riot Games, but it’s also full of potential, so it will be interesting what the region will deliver.
