  • The event had an average of over 1.1 million concurrent viewers
  • However, it peaked at 2.8 million at one semifinal match
  • This boasts well for the upcoming World Championship and LoL esports as a whole

A new format and the intense rivalry between the LPL and LCK led to LoL’s Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) recording impressive viewership numbers.

An event’s viewership is often a good indicator of the state of an esport and it looks like League of Legends is currently doing quite well. Following the 2024 Mid-Season Invitational’s impressive viewership, it’s safe to say that the tournament was quite the banger as it shot last year’s event clean out of the water.

With over 2.8 million fans tuning in at its peak, the 2024 MSI was clearly one of the most popular competitive LoL events in recent years. Interestingly, this peak was not reached during the event’s finals, which saw LPL’s Bilibili Gaming and the LCK’s Gen.G go up against each other. That nail-biting match saw a bit more than 2.6 million fans tune in.

Instead, it was the semi-final match between T1 and BLG on May 18 that broke MSI viewership records. According to stats tracking platform Esports Charts, that match peaked at 2 829 728 viewers. Furthermore, this year saw an average viewership of about 1.1 million people, which is considerably more than last year’s MSI which had around 800 000.

This year’s MSI is even more impressive considering last year’s grand final between JD Gaming and BLG only peaked at 1.1 million viewers- a little more than the average number of fans watching the entire MSI this year.

What Caused the Popularity Spike?

Many factors go into the popularity of an esport or a certain event. However, we can blame the format of MSI 2024 for the event’s success. This year, we saw a better format with best-of-threes for the play-ins and best-of-fives for the main event bracket, semifinals, and grand final games. This made matches be a lot more interesting and intense, prompting more viewers to tune in.

Furthermore, for the semifinals and final, League of Legends fans were treated to the ever-respent rivalry between the LPL and LCK. Both regions are heavyweights when it comes to professional LoL and over the years, they have battled for international supremacy in a very diverse metagame.

While the MSI 2024’s finals have not broken all-time viewership like the semifinal between T1 and BLG, the event was still very exciting and well-liked by fans. If anything, the huge number of viewers promitses that this year’s main event, the 2024 League World Championship, will see a grand
