  • The LoL World Championship sets a new record for number of viewers
  • Viewers witnessed an intense and thrilling series
  • Edward Gaming is this year’s champion, winning the title after many closely-fought games

The League of Legends finals have just finished, and while winners are still celebrating, a new record has been set. Peak viewership for the tournament hit 4 million.

Breaking Records

This World Championship is League of Legends’ biggest event of the year, attracting millions of viewers all around the world to watch the finalists duke it out to see who will win the title. This year, the event was held in Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital. It has always garnered much attention. Yet this year a new record was set. According to Esports Charts, the final’s peak viewership reached 4 million people. This number could be even higher if one counts the viewers from Chinese platforms too.

The crowd with the staggering size gathered to watch the thrilling duel between EDG and DWG KIA. Five games were played in the series, all of which were close and went back and forth between the two teams. At the end of the series, Edward Gaming emerged victorious, winning their first championship. They triumphed with a 3-2 win over South Korea’s DWG KIA.

An Epic Story in the Making

The 4 million viewers tuned on Saturday to one of the most competitive World Championships. Edward Gaming’s victory was a departure from the norm for recent Worlds finals as well, as it was a close victory. Usually, world championships end in a very decisive 3-0. EDG vs. DK’s fourth game broke the previous in-tournament viewership record, reaching 3.55 million. The record before that stood at 3.54 million and was held by the semifinals during T1 and DWG KIA’s series.

EDG and DWG KIA‘s battle resembled one of David versus Goliath. It was the newcomer EDG’s first appearance at a Worlds final, facing off against DWG KIA, which made another attempt to establish themselves as one of the greatest teams of all time.

Viewers not only participated in setting a new score but also saw what can be described as a story in the making. This was truly a championship to remember.
