  • The North American LoL league revealed it has appointed Mark “MarkZ” Zimmerman to the position
  • He will be responsible for creating experiences for fans, players, and teams
  • MarkZ comes to the post in a difficult time for the LCS

“I am committed to exploring new and innovative ways to create the best viewing experiences for fans,” said MarkZ about his new responsibility.

LCS Appoints New Commissioner

A League of Legends Championship Series Commissioner’s role is to oversee the top tier of competitive LoL in North America and focus on creating experiences for fans, players, and teams. Needless to say, it is a position with a lot of responsibility which the LCS has decided to give to popular LoL esports personality Mark “MarkZ” Zimmerman.

The 32-year-old streamer and broadcast talent will carry the title of Commissioner and help build a revised operational strategy for the league. As well as an entertainer, MarkZ also has experience as a coach and analyst for North American esports organizations Curse and Team Liquid. In 2016, he switched to being an on-air talent member for the league. MarkZ will report to Carlos Antunes, Head of League of Legends Esports for the Americas.

“For almost a decade, I have devoted my career to the LCS, and it is with immense honor that I undertake the responsibility of representing the fans, players, teams, and partners in my new position as the Commissioner of the LCS,” said MarkZ about the new appointment, showing great enthusiasm about his new role. “As I step into this new role, I am committed to exploring new and innovative ways to create the best viewing experiences for fans, and inspire our community so that our sport can be celebrated for generations to come.”

MarkZ Is Faced with a Big Challenge

The LoL celebrity comes into this position at a very strange time for the league. It is no surprise to anyone who has been looking at the LCS over the past year or so that the organization is struggling somewhat compared to its counterparts from other sides of the world.

Back in October, some LoL personalities pained a grim picture that LCS teams are “exploding” as player salaries plummet. This would mean that organizations would not be able to afford the best players, which would have a detrimental effect on their performance on the global scene.

This could be linked to the diminishing of the fan base of the league, which was in turn likely caused by the restructuring it underwent earlier in the year. Back in August, the LCS finals saw a record-breaking low viewership, down 17% from the Spring Split’s final peak, making it the lowest final in the league’s history.

The causes for this worrying trend are likely many more, but what is clear is that MarkZ will have his hands quite full in trying to help the league get back on its feet in 2024.
