  • Valve removed the Dota 2 Pro Circuit in September
  • Gorgc thinks this will mean nobody will be watching the Tier 2 scene anymore
  • He also thinks sketchy gambling practices in China were also a reason for Valve to remove the DPC

In an attempt to improve Dota 2 grassroots events, Valve decided to remove the DPC, but Swedish pro player Janne “Gorgc” Stefanovski thinks this could have bad consequences for Tier 2.

How Competitive Dota 2 Changed Over the Past Months

When it comes to massive esports franchises, such as Dota 2, the developers of the game often have the final say in what kinds of tournaments can and cannot be played. Valve is certainly one of those companies that can throw its weight around when and where it sees fit, which has resulted in some massive changes in the professional Dota 2 scene.

Speaking of the scene, the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) was a crucial part of the ecosystem, providing teams from around the globe with the opportunity to prove themselves through various Valve-sponsored tournaments. The top-ranking teams at the end of the year were invited to that year’s The International, arguably the biggest event in all of esports.

However, in September, Valve ended the DPC in a move that seemed quite shocking to many players and fans. The company reasoned that the many rules brought upon by the DPC have stifled grassroots events. Months after this, fans are discussing if this is positive or negative and it seems like popular Dota 2 personality Janne “Gorgc” Stefanovski leans on the latter opinion.

Gorgc Criticizes the Decision

In a recent livestream on Twitch, the Swedish player talked about the positive aspects of the DPC, explaining how it provided a platform for tier 2 players to rise in prominence. However, he also warned that the lack of the DPC would lead to a decline in viewership as there will be fewer Tier 2 tournaments to be watched.

“The tier 2 scene of Dota is basically dead. I mean, nobody’s going to watch it, at least, you know what I mean. That’s a bit of a problem,” Gorgc said during the livestream. “You know, maybe it deserves to die. No more Team Bald, you know? What can you do? Maybe it does deserve to die.”

The player also had an interesting take on the reasons why Valve decided to remove the DPC. After a comment said “nobody was watching it (the DPC) anyway”, Gorgc acknowledged that the tier 2 scene had a lot of sketchy gambling, with the player raising concerns about the integrity of the China region. He pointed out that the tier 2 scene was rife with issues like rigged matches and gambling.

“It was riddled with gambling shit (…) Cause, f it’s Valve-approved, people will be like, ‘Oh, it’s Valve-approved. I can gamble on it,’ and then they don’t realize it’s some f*cking 7K MMR Chinese stack that’s been manipulated, or some shit,” he explained. “It’s too sketchy, man. That’s why Valve kinda wanted to step away from it I bet as well, ’cause there was way too much going on in China.”

Whether or not the removal of the DPC will have the effects that Valve desires remains to be seen, but one should not the concerns raised by pro players like Gorgc.

From our 5 star review…

“In fact, we would argue that Bitcasino’s esports product is one of the best we have experienced. It’s simple, clear-cut, and offers a variety of products and options that other platforms are failing to deliver on.”
