AR Unveils New Signings

What better occasion to start a new thing than the beginning of the New Year. Chinese esports organization Azure Ray seems to understand this quite well, as it announced its complete roster for the 2024 competitive season yesterday. This puts an end to the turbulence that the team has been going through over the past few weeks with its large roster changes, which resulted in Azure Ray left with just two members.

“After countless rounds of communication and negotiation and unremitting efforts, and with full respect for the wishes of the players, with immediate effect, our Azure Ray team has made the following adjustments,” Azure Ray’s statement on Weibo reads, followed by the names and brief descriptions of its new players. With the addition of three new members, the organization’s Dota 2 roster now looks like this:

  • Lou “Lou” Zhen
  • Zeng “Ori” Jiaoyang
  • Zhang “Faith_bian” Ruida
  • Xu “fy” Linsen
  • Jiang “天命” An

It’s interesting to note that Ori and Faith_bian have come out of retirement to play in the new team. Both stepped back from competitive Dota 2 in late 2022. Time will tell if they managed to keep their edge sharp during last year. The squad is completed by fy, who is a veteran of the Chinese Dota 2 professional scene.

With this announcement, AR finds players who occupy the previously empty midlaner, offlaner, and position four support. These places were left vacant after AR parted ways with Xm, Xxs, and XinQ last week. The trio were crucial for AR’s success at the ESL Kuala Lumpur that was held earlier in December, but that success did not guarantee their spots on the team’s lineup. Instead, the three were transferred to Xtreme Gaming’s roster, which is a sister team to that of AR, both falling under the same owner.

“Even though we never talked about it in public, everyone involved in it all knows that we will make this change after ESL One Kuala Lumpur,” XinQ allegedly said, according to Chinese Dota 2 commentator Benjamin “Bkop” Kopilow on Twitter.

Azure Ray has certainly undergone some serious changes over the past few weeks, but the fact that well-established veterans have come out of retirement is certainly something to be excited about in 2024.
