After joining Ninjas in Pyjamas in 2020, 40-year-old Jonas Gundersen has announced he is stepping down as Chief Operating Officer.

Gundersen Leaves NiP

Over the past few years, Ninjas in Pyjamas have seen massive growth. From an organization of a couple of dozen players and staff, the franchise has expanded immensely and is now a global organization with over 300 employees, 16 teams, and five offices. Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jonas Gundersen has been crucial for that development. However, the 40-year-old retired Counter-Strike player announced earlier today that he is stepping down from his post in the organization.

“After 4 years of awesome growth, it’s time for me to hand over the controls: I am leaving Ninjas in Pyjamas to start my next venture,” Gundersen wrote on his LinkedIn page. He also highlighted the organization’s growth over said period pointing out major milestones in its development such as last year’s merger with Chinese giants ESV5, and entering the LPL, China’s franchise competition in League of Legends.

That being said, it was not all smooth sailing for the organization. In January last year, Gundersen said the team is ready to contend for Majors following NiP’s signings of Kristian “k0nfig” Wienecke and Daniil “headtr1ck” Valitov. However, 12 months later, the organization is sitting at the 24th place in the world rankings.

Gundersen Talks About the Past and His Future Plans

Gundersen is a well-known face in esports, having played CS 1.6 back between 2002 and 2006 when he was known as “calc”. Since then, his activities have spanned multiple disciplines and industries with him founding startups, working as a poker coach, and even recording a music album. Before joining NiP in 202, Gundersen last worked for Danish esports organization North Esports as COO.

“I’ve been an entrepreneur for 15+ years, as a founder, executive operator, and startup employee. The desire to create, solve problems, and bring people together is deeply rooted in my DNA, and shaping the future of esports is one of the most enjoyable challenges of my career,” he talked about his career in his post.

Over the past months, Gundersen had become less involved in his position of COO in Ninjas in Pyjamas. This happened after the appointment of Erik Wendel as Director of Esports and the return of Björn “THREAT” Pers to the organization as General Manager.

Gundersen talked about what his next plans entail, although he did not go into detail about them. “My next move involves driving impact and creating value across a variety of entities, and while I can’t reveal too much just yet, 2024 is already filled with inspiring travels, people, and projects. I am genuinely excited about all the positive and ambitious vibes out there, and I feel more than ever, that the future of esports looks incredibly bright. More on that soon,” he wrote.

“In fact, we would argue that Bitcasino’s esports product is one of the best we have experienced. It’s simple, clear-cut, and offers a variety of products and options that other platforms are failing to deliver on.”
