  • G2 lifted IEM Dallas’ trophy after concluding an interesting run in the event
  • The team played with a substitute throughout the tournament but still one
  • The squad’s Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov won MVP of the event

German esports org G2 took revenge on Vitality at the finals of IEM Dallas 2024 to secure the grand prize and record its first CS2 title.

G2 Win IEM Dallas

Looking at G2’s start during the IEM Dallas 2024, many doubted the team would get far in the tournament. However, the organization not only disproved these doubts but absolutely shattered them as they lifted the trophy on Sunday night. To make the achievement even more important, G2 did so after defeating fan-favorites Vitality in a 2-1 match to claim their first Counter-Strike 2 title.

While winning a CS2 major in itself is very impressive, it’s even more astonishing when you see G2’s entire run throughout the event. The squad started off on the wrong footing, posting somewhat bad results in the beginning. This was partly due to the fact that G2 had to play without its in-game leader as HooXi had to miss the IEM Dallas 2024 due to various personal reasons. G2 brought aboard Jake “Stewie2K” Yip to fill the gap. However, this had the consequence of the squad performing somewhat badly initially, as Stewie2K didn’t have much time to practice with his fellow players.

However, things got rolling soon as G2’s members seemingly found the right tact. The squad won several matches, including eliminating fan-favorites Liquid to gain a spot in the IEM Dallas’ playoffs. From then on, the team was on the final stretch that would eventually lead them to the last encounter against Vitality for the event’s first place.

How did G2’s Players perform?

Every team is as successful as its players and it seems that Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov and substitute Stewie2K were both key to G2’s victory. The former player was named MVP of IEM Dallas, gaining his second career HLTV Most Valuable Player award at the age of just 19.

He averaged a 1.57 rating throughout the event but he seemingly saved the best for last. During the match against Vitality, he ended the encounter with a 25-11 in K-D, taking his grand final kill count to a whopping 83 (0.98 per round). It must have been a sweet revenge against Vitality who previously beat G2 in the earlier stages of the IEM Dallas to secure a playoff spot. Having already secured three EVPs this term, m0NESY is very much in the conversation for No. 1 at the end of 2024.

Meanwhile, Stewie2K also had quite a glow-up during the event. While he did not start his return to CS after a stint away in VALORANT, the player pulled through and rediscovered his previous skills. “I’m back,” Stewie said following the grand final win. “It’s probably the best feeling ever. I feel like I’ve been through hell for this shit, I’m very grateful and very thankful, honestly.”

G2 handed the trophy to Stewie who hasn’t lifted one since his time in Team Liquid at IEM Chicago almost five years ago.
