  • The Call of Duty League’s 2022-2023 Major I just ended with the Subliner’s victory
  • Subliners took revenge against Surge, which defeated them before
  • The match was a close one with Subliners barely scraping enough to win

The first tournament of the 2022-23 Call of Duty League competitive season has ended with the unexpected victory of underdogs New York Subliners.

Subliners Defeat Surge

The last weekend saw the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, New York, be the center of attention for Call of Duty fans as the Call of Duty League hosted its first major for the new competitive season. Many fans’ favorites were teams like Atlanta, Toronto, and OpTic, but none of them got first place. Instead, the trophy was lifted by underdogs New York Subliners after an intense battle against Seattle Surge.

Despite the 4-1 victory for the Subliners, each game was too close to comfort, with Surge constantly being just a hair away from scoring a point. However, the New York Subliners consistently shut down their opponent’s advances last minute, surprising everyone with their tenacity. They faltered in Search and Destroy and Control at different points throughout Major I, but they were able to win maps when they needed to in order to stay alive. The Subliners never seemed to lose hope, no doubt aided by the fact they were playing home ground.

As suggested by the Subliner’s tweet after their victory, the Major’s final was a chance for revenge against Surge, against whom the New Yorkers lost the second-round winner’s bracket match. Now the Subliners were out for blood and despite Seattle Surge making it extremely hard for them, the Subliners crawled on top after a tough slog.

The team took the lead in the match with a very close 250-248 Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint victory during the first game. Invigorated by this win, the New Yorkers won the next two games with some room to spare, before Seattle took revenge against Subliners on Mercado Las Almas Hardpoint. However, this was not enough to turn the tide and the New York Subliners rounded up the match with a devastating 6-2 search and destroy victory on Embassy. Here are the results for each map:

  • Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint: 250-248 New York
  • Mercado Las Almas Search and Destroy: 6-4 New York
  • Breenbergh Hotel Control: 3-2 New York
  • Mercado Las Almas Hardpoint: 250-231 Seattle
  • Embassy Search and Destroy: 6-2 New York

With the conclusion of Major I, the CDL will take a break and return on January 13 with the Major II qualifiers.
