Mobile Legends Arrives in Cambodia to Launch a Professional League

in Mobile Legends
July 21, 2021
  • Mobile Legends makes a foray into Cambodia, expanding into a new region with a competitive format
  • MPL Cambodia will give local talent an opportunity to distinguish themselves on the competitive MLBB scene
  • Moonton continues to invest heavily in events around the world to boost MLBB's competitive footprint

As Mobile Legends: Bang Bang continues to grow, Moonton explores new markets, with Cambodia becoming the latest to get an MPL.

Cambodia Gets a Competitive MLBB League

Moonton is nowhere near done with popularizing its flagship mobile MOBA game, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Shortly after announcing the beginning of MPL Brazil, the game's professional league focused on the Brazilian market, Moonton shifted attention to Cambodia, with the country getting its own iteration of the competitive format.

As a result, players from the country will be able to participate in MPL Cambodia, designed to nurture a competitive ecosystem in a market that has a high rate of participation in mobile gaming. Moonton is teaming up with telecoms company Smart to spearhead its efforts in the country as well as help establish a high-level competitive ecosystem that allows players to hone their skills.

Similar to other regions, there will be two seasons, with the first one commencing in August and running through October. This is an ambitious increase of the game's footprint, which has been expanding at a good clip, although now facing a lot of competition from Wild Rift and Honor of Kings.

What Do We Know about MPL Cambodia So Far?

Cambodia is a country that has had strong ties to Mobile Legends for years now. Impunity KH, one of the country's most successful rosters, has been present in various events, but Cambodia itself has not had a localized competition that could potentially lead to fresh talent, a bigger player base, and a more sustainable long-term model, which is now part of Wild Rift's main strategy.

Smart CEO Thomas Hundt expressed his enthusiasm to be partnering up with Moonton in order to bring one of the most popular games to the region in a more permanent capacity. “We always listen to our customers, many of whom are passionate gamers that want a proper league here that will provide real competition and real opportunities to progress,” Hundt said, quoted by a local media outlet.

Full details about the registration and exact tournament format are still forthcoming, and so is the reward. Competing against Impunity KH would not be easy for teams that are new to the MLBB scene, but it would certainly set the competitive bar high, incentivizing players to aim higher.

Previously, Moonton revealed the Mobile Legends Southeast Asia Cup, which took place between June 7 and June 13 and featured a $150,000 prize pool.
