TSM Spent $5 Million on LoL Team but Wants to Rebuild over 3 Years

in League of Legends
March 1, 2022
  • TSM has not been performing well in the 2022 Spring Split
  • Fans ask where the money for the new players went
  • The organization says it made a rick signing unproven talent

With TSM not having a great LCS Spring Split, questions arise as to what kind of roster exactly has the organization invested into.

Fans Criticize TSM’s Roster Composition

TSM currently has a 1-8 record through the first round robin of the 2022 LCS Spring Split. Coupled with TSM losing 30 million followers in the past few months, it is safe to say that the organization has not been having a great time. With such abysmal results, people have been asking questions about the organization behind the scenes decisions. the team’s CEO Andy “Reginald” Dinh recently addressed these concerns in the TSM subreddit.

Discussions arose about TSM’s former president Leena Xu and her comment on the possible rosters that the team could have fielded for 2022. She and former TSM general manager Parth Naidu both wanted to sign a combination of Jensen, Doublelift, Vulcan, who currently plays for Evil Geniuses. However, Xu claimed they were told that was “not worth the cost”.

Reginald responded by saying the one-to-one cost was never a crucial part of the decisions, confirming TSM spent around $5 million on its League of Legends team for 2022. One million went towards acquiring support Shenyi and mid laner Keaiduo. Reginald added that the proposed lineup of  Jensen, Doublelift, and Vulcan would have cost the same amount.

Reginald said that he thought this roster would have more consistent performance, but thought it wouldn't have the potential to dominate the league or go far at Worlds. “We wanted to build over three years, not one,” he explained. “Parth recommended against this option [by the way], and I still agree. We don’t want to make safe bets to be in the top four in NA for one year and then rebuild again with veterans.”

TSM and Player/Coaching Issues

Reginald also wanted to mention that TSM’s decision on its current roster did not come lightly. The organization decided on the current composition after scouting for talents in NA, Korea, and China, while also flying in 20 players for tryouts. They finally decided to take a big risk by signing unproven talents, which seems has not panned all too well for them.

TSM had an abysmal 0-3 superweek, and fans are starting to wonder what went wrong and if it has anything to do with the team’s composition. These worries are exacerbated by the fact that long-time veteran Parth “Parth” Naidu left TSM after seven years with the organization just a month ago. His experience and knowledge would have immensely helped TSM in these tough times.

If TSM wants to challenge for the LCS championship this season, they would really have to step up their game in the remaining four weeks of the 2022 Spring Split. Additionally, the organization’s management will have to figure out the direction this roster is heading in if TSM wants to compete in the Worlds next year.
