- Popular dev Greg Street leaves Riot Games after nine years with the company
- Many expressed concerns about the development of the LoL MMO
- He and Riot co-founder Marc Merrill reassured fans the game is still being worked on
A series of personal losses over the past few months has prompted League of Legends MMO director Greg Street to rethink his career, leading him to leave Riot Games.
Street Leaves Riot
An MMO set in League of Legends’ massive and complex world of Runeterra has been a focal talking point in the community for years, even before Riot Games officially announced that they are developing such a game. However, we have so far not seen much of the project and it seems development on it will slow down more as its director, Greg Street, has announced he is leaving Riot Games.
With Street’s departure, the MMO project loses a key contributor who’s had a ton of experience. He is well-known in the wider gaming community, having worked on releases like Arcane, Realms of Runeterra, and K/DA. Street has also worked for several years as the system designer for World of Warcraft, so it’s safe to say he was more than qualified enough to be the LoL MMO director.
Now that Street has left Riot, the release date for the game becomes even more uncertain. The company had not previously announced such a date for the MMO, but a 2024 or 2025 launch was widely presumed. With Street’s departure from Riot, it’s very possible the release date would be pushed further back.
Why did Street Leave Riot?
In a series of tweets, the now-former LoL MMO director explained that the decision to step down was not an easy one to take and thanked everyone for the support he received over the past few months. Street was absent on the Internet for some time due to a combination of personal losses he and his family experienced last year.
Naturally, Street decided to spend time with his loved ones during this difficult period. “A combo of personal and professional considerations led me to down this path,” one of his tweets reads. “We experienced some devastating personal losses last year and I want to be closer to my surviving family.”
While’s Street’s decision is understandable many expressed concerns about the development of the LoL MMO. The game dev reassured them that work on the game will continue as he has brought together and built a good team and he has faith the game is in good hands. Riot co-founder Marc Merrill also reassured fans that despite the MMO still being at a relatively early stage, work on it will still continue.

Despite stepping down from his position at Riot, Street still plans on staying in game development and shared he already has some interesting opportunities presented to him.
