After many months of silence, the LCS’ new commissioner Jackie Felling announced that the LCS 2022 Mid-Season Showdown will have a live audience in Texas.
LCS Commissioner Says the Event Will Have an Audience
The Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on in-person events the past two years. League of Legends esports has been hit especially hard. The game has always had large live events gathering thousands of viewers. The pandemic caused many of them to be either postponed or straight-up canceled.
However, fans in the US can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the LCS’ new commissioner Jackie Felling confirmed the league will the upcoming 2022 Mid-Season Showdown with a live audience. The venue chosen for the event is the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
In a post on Reddit, Felling responded to fans’ questions, who were concerned if the finals were still going to be held. She also revealed that information about thickets and other things will be coming in several weeks. This was the first major update around the postseason plans in seven months.
In her comment, Felling explained that the Covid pandemic had, predictably, made event planning much more difficult. “We’re pumped to finally be in Texas and appreciate everyone understanding as we work through these last little details to get out tickets soon,” Felling said, adding that the team is pushing to get the details out ASAP.
The Pandemic and the LCS
The Covid pandemic did a real number on many in-person events like concerts, film screenings, and sports events. Esports curiously rose in popularity during the pandemic, mostly due to the fact their events could be held online, which aptly, they were. However, even with the convenience of online tournaments, after two years of being forced to play online, both players and fans are eager to experience the events in real life.
Last year, the 2021 LCS Championship had to be relocated from the Prudential Center in New Jersey to the LCS Studio in Los Angeles. Because of the influx of Covid cases in the US, the event didn’t have in-person fans either as a measure to protect the players and staff involved in the production. Because of this, the news that the LCS is returning in Texas is welcomed by fans who miss live events.
There is also the possibility that fans come back to the LCS Studio, with Felling saying “it shouldn’t be much longer now.” The 2022 Mid-Season Showdown will take place on April 23 and 24.
