- FunPlus Phoenix gets knocked out from 2022 LPL Summer Split playoffs
- EDG controlled most engagements of the game
- FPX came back in round three but that was not sufficient to turn the tides of battle
With a final score of 3-1, Edward Gaming crushes FunPlus Phoenix’s hopes of advancing further into the series for the second time this year.
EDG Eliminates FPX
Famous sports team rivalries, like Los Angeles Lakers versus Boston Celtics, or Manchester United versus Liverpool have often been some of the most impactful sagas in traditional sports, drawing millions of fans in. As esports continues to become more and more popular, similar rivalries also rise to prominence.
One fledgling discord might be arising between EDward Gaming and FunPlus Phoenix, with the former currently being on top. Like when they first duked it out in the 2022 LPL Spring Split playoffs, from which EDG emerged victorious, the Chinese once again defeated FPX, knocking them out of the League of Legends Spring Playoffs.
With a final score of 3-1, EDG ends FPX’s hopes of advancing further into the series. Edward Gaming’s victory comes after a four-game win streak. The team’s morale was high as it entered its clash with FPX, decisively winning the first two rounds of the match. FPX came close to turning the tables by winning round three, but their efforts were quickly stomped by EDG, who eventually won the match.
How Did the Match Go?
EDG played it smart and cautious at the beginning of the match., During round one, they continuously provoked small skirmishes and responded to the ones from their opponents. Eventually, these probing attacks grew in scope as EDG took the initiative.
The team’s main damage dealers were Viper’s Kalista and Flandre’s Kennen, who steadily drained their opponents’ health bars. Due to the snowballing effect that both players initiated, FPX was not able to turn the tides of battle.
The second round was a similar story. Viper, who this time picked Sivir, was once again the main damage dealer. Aided by Scout’s Ahri, the two players denied FPX’s opportunities to counterattack in every team fight. The round ended with a victory for EDG, with Viper’s score standing at an amazing 11/1/10 KDA score.
Although things were looking bad for FPX, the players refused to surrender. Counting on the fact there were still chances to turn the tides of the game, the team fought with all its might. FPX’s Care, Summit, and Lwx, manning Ahri, Jax, and Zeri respectively, came in at crucial clutch moments, which eventually led to the team’s first and only won round.
Their efforts, however, were not enough as EDG came back in the fourth and final round. Supporting their reputation as last year’s champions, EDG managed to bounce back and crush FPX, despite playing with a significant gold deficit.
Viper, now playing Lucian, once again shined in this round by depleting enemy champions’ health bars with his combo. With a 12/2/3 score, resulting in a 3-1 win for EDG, Viper and his teammates ended FunPlus Phoenix’s hopes to progress further for the second time this year. Edward Gaming’s next opponent is another one they know very well – RNG, which they will face on August 20.
