DWG KIA Lands a Deal with Current League Champion Deft

in League of Legends
November 23, 2022
  • DWG picked up Deft after current champions DRX released him as a free agent
  • The team also signed Nongshim RedForce’s Canna
  • DWG hopes to replicate its 2020 success with its revamped roster

Following its elimination from Gen.G during the quarterfinals of the World Championship, DWG KIA is looking to restructure its team with current champion Deft.

DWG Signs Deft and Canna

Since the free agency period for League of Legends has begun, various organizations have been clamoring to sign the best players of the previous season in preparation for the 2023 competitive season. One such organization is DWG KIA, which recently scored a big deal by signing Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu, current World Champion AD carry.

[Announcement: Welcome]

DWG KIA would like to introduce our new AD carry, Kim ‘Deft’ Hyuk-kyu. Please send lots of love and support for ‘Deft’, champion of the 2022 World Championship. Thank you.#DWGKIA #Welcome_Deft pic.twitter.com/lr2XmmrSIf

Until recently, Deft was part of DRX, helping the team climb from relative obscurity in the early year, to eventually becoming the League of Legends World Champions. In the process, the 26-year-old player broke a record for the oldest player to win a League World Champion.

Deft is joined in the new roster by Kim “Canna” Chang-dong, formerly a top laner for T1 and Nongshim RedForce. He left his previous team when it decided to promote its Challenger players to the main team for the 2023 LCK season, putting its entire current roster up for grabs in the meantime.

When looking at Nongshim RedForce’s performance this year, it’s easy to see why the organization wants to experiment with new talent. The team finished in eighth place in both the LCK 2022 Spring and Summer splits, denying them further progression into this competitive League season.

However, DRX releasing precious players like Deft is somewhat questionable, especially considering the organization just won Worlds 2022. It’s still unclear what DRX plans to do for the 2023 competitive season.

Although DWG had a good run this year, being one of the most interesting participants during the World Championship 2022, the team was ousted from the competition by Gen.G in the quarterfinals, in a tight 3-2 series. The rest of the LCK representatives at the tournament continued forward, leaving DWG behind, with DRX eventually beating T1 in the finals for the Summoner’s Cup.

Now, DWG is hoping to achieve the successes it saw in 2020 when it won the Worlds. With the addition of Canna, and current champion Daft, the organization completes its roster for the next competitive season. The two players join jungler Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu, mid laner Heo “ShowMaker” Su, and support Kim “Kellin” Hyeong-gyu.
