The clash between CLG and Cloud9 provided the LCS with a much-needed boost in ratings, recording a peak viewership of over 200 000.
A New Record Was Set
With the start of the LCS 2022 Summer Split playoffs, many fans are returning to the franchise, boosting the League’s viewership numbers. So many viewers flocked to see the match between Cloud9 and CGL on August 24, that the North American LoL League set a record for peak viewership numbers.
According to data from Esports Charts, the five-game set between the two teams drew in a crowd of 202 920 concurrent viewers at one point. This marks a new record for the Summer Split. Furthermore, this number surpasses the viewership of the final day of the regular season last week. For comparison, the final day of the LCS also saw a huge spike in interest, peaking at around 140 000 concurrent viewers on Twitch alone.
Still, these numbers decreased slightly throughout the weekend playoffs. According to data from TwitchTracker, the first round of postseason matches averaged just around 103 000 concurrent viewers.
The LCS’s Viewership Numbers Are Slowly Rising
Every stream, no matter if it’s of a large esports event, or a small streamer with a couple of dozen viewers, sees constant flow in its viewership as people drop in and out to check up on what’s happening. The same applies to the LCS Summer Split. For example, the first four weeks of the split saw an average viewer count of about 80 000 per broadcast.
As the league moves into its playoff cycle, those average numbers are steadily increasing. The match between C9 and CLG is a positive sign in that direction. It coincided with other leagues’ schedules, like the LPL and LCK which also featured five-game series earlier in the day. In fact, the LCK’s semifinal series between T1 and DWG KIA, which saw T1 winning and going to the Worlds, recorded a peak viewership of 1 million.
This week is also very busy for the LSC as it will host four straight days of playoff matches, starting on Thursday, August 25. The weekend will see 100 Thieves and Evil Geniuses make their respective Summer Split playoff debuts. With over 387 000 concurrent viewers, these two teams played the most-viewed match of the season during the LCS Spring Split finals.
