Riot’s Mobile Games Have Raked In Over $100 Million in Profits

in Industry
July 29, 2021
  • Riot Games’ mobile titles have earned the company over $100 million of pure profit
  • Most of those earnings have come from the success of League of Legends: Wild Rift
  • Riot Games will be pressing mobile gaming further as it has promised to release VALORANT for mobile as well

Riot Games’ decision to delve into mobile gaming has proved to be the right one given how quickly its games have achieved recognition.

The Three Mobile Titles’ Earnings

Despite the financial risks involved with developing something outside of your comfort zone, Riot Games’ daring venture into mobile gaming has paid off as its new titles are enjoying indisputable success. The video game company has earned over $100 million in profits from its three mobile titles, with most of that number being thanks to League of Legends: Wild Rift.

The approximate numerical data was provided by app market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

According to the estimates, Riot’s first mobile title, the Android/iOS version of Teamfight Tactics, has been downloaded over 15 million times and has made $27.5 million – more than a quarter of the company’s total mobile game profit. The game’s mobile version was released a little bit more than a year ago, on March 19, 2020.

Teamfight Tactics was followed by Legends of Runeterra, which was released on April 29, the same year, for both PC and mobile. Legends of Runeterra is a card game that got downloaded 13 million times and has earned Riot about $16.2 million.

However, the lion’s share of the profits is thanks to Riot Games’ latest mobile entry: League of Legends: Wild Rift. Wild Rift is League of Legends’ mobile counterpart, which has been receiving a lot of attention and esports opportunities of its own. It has been downloaded over $46.3 million times since its initial Southeast Asia release in October last year. The game has raked in over $64.7 million of pure profit.

Wild Rift’s Momentum

According to the data, players from the United States have spent $28 million on the game, making it especially lucrative in the country even though its initial Americas release was delayed by COVID-19.

Wild Rift has been enjoying an impressive success for a newly introduced title despite the fact that it is yet to be released in China. Riot Games’ team has been passionately supporting the mobile title with a constant stream of updates, so it is likely its success will only continue to grow.

The game has opened a whole new array of mobile esports opportunities for Riot. The company will be seeking to make Wild Rift esports just as appealing as League of Legends esports is. To this end, numerous Wild Rift events have been organized, with a World Championship scheduled for the end of this year.

With its mobile titles being undoubtedly successful, Riot Games has one thing left to do: bring VALORANT to Android/iOS.
