Generation Esports Acquires the Military Gaming League

in Industry
May 23, 2022
  • The MGL provides tournaments for active service members and veterans of the US military
  • Its acquisition by Generation Esports will bring new opportunities for growth
  • MGL will be hosting a new competition called Season Zero using GE’s platform

US-military-focused esports league Military Gaming League was recently acquired by General Esports.

Military Gaming League was acquitted by Generation Esports

Generation Esports, a worldwide leader for gaming communities, and also the founder of High School Esports League, recently acquired the US-military-focused esports league Military Gaming League (MGL). The League provides tournaments for active service members and veterans of the US military and it will continue its activities past the purchase.

In addition to it providing a place for US military members, both active and past, to compete in many popular esports, the MGL is also a place to bring awareness and point to resources to combat mental health issues. This includes the effects of PTSD, suicide prevention, and other serious mental health-related matters that are all too common to military members and their families.

We are excited to announce that MGL is now part of @JoinGenEsports, an even bigger family that supports our military and veterans, and one that will constantly propel MGL's vision and mission, forward. Check out the full announcement below! https://t.co/xcTVhJJFle

The acquisition comes after a 12-month-long funding campaign for Generation Esports. Over the past year, the organization has raised more than $30 million which will be invested in various projects to further expand Generation Esports’ portfolio.

What Generation Esports Plans for MGL

To start its new plans for the MGL, Generation Esports will be hosting a new competition called Season Zero. It’s a five-week tournament, open to active duty, National Guard, veterans, and reserves, which will see them compete in games like Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, VALORANT, and Call of Duty.

“It has always been our goal to do what is best for our members,” said Military Gaming League co-founder Daniel Ball. “We want to spotlight the great work that all of the Armed Forces members are doing and give them every opportunity to receive the recognition they deserve while finding comradery amongst each other.” He added he is excited to see the MGL being elevated to a new level thanks to this partnership.

The series of tournaments will end in a Championship weekend taking place from July 1-3. Although details on tournament partners and prize money have not yet been revealed, it’s known that qualifying teams will compete for a chance to earn an MGL Challenge Coin.

The Chief Commercial Officer at Generation Esports, Jon Bukosky, said he is thrilled to see MGL’s community being added to the organization. This acquisition continues our position of providing positive gaming experiences across all spectrums like Scholastics, Amateur, and now the Armed Forces. We’re honored to be working with the MGL founders in growing this world-class community that is dedicated to our men & women in uniform.”
