Evil Geniuses Parts Ways with Four Coaches

in Industry
October 27, 2022
  • The move comes as a surprise to many fans
  • EG won the LCS this year and had an overall great performance
  • The organization is yet to announce any replacements

In a surprising move, Evil Geniuses decided to part ways with its entire coaching staff, despite its good performance this year.

Four Coaches Leave Evil Geniuses

The end of this year’s competitive League of Legends season is drawing closer and it’s a time when esports organizations start preparing for next year. Often, these preparations include the search for new players and staff or the release of those whose contracts have expired or have not performed according to expectations.

This is why it came as a surprise to many when LCS champions Evil Geniuses announced they are releasing a whopping four coaches. By dismissing on-stage coaches Gabriel “Turtle” Peixoto, and Earl “Rigby” Han, as well as other coaches Connor “Artemis” Doyle and Sebastian “ZzLegendary” Demontigny, EG clears out its League of Legends coaching staff.

“This past season you helped us accomplish what many said was impossible by bringing EG its first LCS championship,” Evil Geniuses wrote on Twitter recently to thank their now-former training staff members. “We wish you the best in the future and will always appreciate our contributions.”

The announcement comes not long after rumors started circulating that EG’s “head of coaching staff” Peter Dun would be leaving the org and heading back to Europe. His reasons for doing so are allegedly to coach Team Heretics, the newest addition to the LEC.

Why Did EG Part Ways with Its Coaches?

When we see such a mass clearing up of staff in esports, it’s usually because the organization is unhappy with the coaches’ job during the season. But considering Evil Geniuses’ good performance this season, it should come as everyone’s surprise that the organization decided to do so. After all, why would you part ways with a staff that helped you win the LCS?

The coaches seemed to work rather well with the players, constructing a good core of athletes. Most of EG’s players will also continue with the organization into 2023 while only the contract of top laner Jeong “Impact” Eon-young is going to expire.

This year was quite historical for EG in terms of performance. The team went on two separate playoff runs that ended in international berths. During the Spring Split, EG finished atop the LCS, winning its first domestic championship en route to a top-four finish at the Mid-Season Invitational.

The team went on to compete at the World Championship but was unfortunately knocked out during the group stage. It’s not known if this is the reason why EG parts ways with four of its coaches, but even if it is a factor, it’s likely not the only one. The organization has not yet announced who will replace the four coaches.
