  • Activision have yet to announce which studio will be creating CoD’s 2025 iteration
  • The devs for the other CoD games until 2027 are already known
  • It leads many to think 2025 will be made either by Sledgehammer Games or High Moon Studios

With about 20 months left before the release of Call of Duty 2025, the game apparently still does not have a lead developer.

CoD 2025 Still Not in Development

The Call of Duty franchise is popular for adding at least one title to its ever-growing roster of games each year. To manage such a tight schedule, the creators of the franchise, Activision, employ the services of many studios that work on different games in parallel, in order to ensure a yearly release.

Things are usually planned out years ahead and the developers of each upcoming game are known well in advance. However, according to various leaks and rumors, it seems that there is still no leading studio for the creation of CoD 2025 (which still has no official name). With less than two years from its scheduled release, some fans are worried about the quality of the eventual game.

It’s not like there isn’t a precedent for their worries as many fans complained that Modern Warfare III’s campaign was rushed. Considering the often tight schedules that Activision has pressed on its developers, perhaps this turnout of events should not be too surprising.

Who Is Working on Future CoD Games?

Call of Duty 2025 is set to be released in November of 2025, meaning there are less than two years left to develop the game. Fans have been trying to figure out, based on leaks, rumors, and conjectural evidence, which studio would be the developer for the game.

According to some hearsay, the studios for CoDs 2024, 2026, and 2027 have already been assigned, leaving out the developers of CoD 2025. This game is supposed to be a direct sequel to Black Ops 2 and not much else is known about it.

But if we look at the list of the devs who made CoD games over the years, we can assume that this would either be Sledgehammer Games or High Moon Studios. This is because CoD 2024 is rumored to be another Treyarch game set in the Gulf War, Infinity Ward is taking the helm for CoD 2026, and Sledgehammer will be working on 2027. That being said, with the latter already working on a title set to release three years in the future, they might not be the ones working on CoD 2025, leaving High Moon Studios as another likely candidate for the job.

Insider Gaming reporter Tom Henderson seems to support those claims. “It’s my understanding that it was meant to be SHG, but following on from the 16-month development cycle of MW3, they basically refused and didn’t want to become a ‘year 2 support studio,’” he wrote in his article.

With the release of the game ticking fast, Activision would do better to act now and assign the title’s development to a studio as soon as possible,
