Blizzard Becomes Target of a DDoS Attack

in Industry
November 25, 2021
  • Blizzard announced on Twitter that their servers are undergoing a DDoS attack
  • Players have been complaining of lag, massive waiting queues, and kicking from the game
  • Could this have been done as revenge for Blizzard’s mishaps?

Disconnects, latency, and long queues plague users as Blizzard servers experience a DDoS attack.

Battle.net Launcher Gets Targeted by a DDoS

Players recently experienced a multitude of connection problems when trying to the Battle.net launcher. This was caused by a DDoS attack on the service. Blizzard explained this is the case in a series of Twitter posts.

[#BNet] We are currently experiencing a DDoS attack, which may result in high latency and disconnections for some players. We are actively working to mitigate this issue.

— Blizzard CS – The Americas (@BlizzardCS) November 24, 2021

A “Breaking News” message also appeared on the Battle.net launcher, explaining that the servers are currently experiencing a DDoS attack. The problems players experienced ranged greatly. Some encountered connection problems, massive lag issues, and kicking from the game when they tried to play titles like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft.

A Distributed Denial of Service attack occurs when an individual or group of individuals overwhelm a server with requests for traffic, crippling its ability to send and receive data.

An Intentional Attack?

Recently Activision Blizzard has been getting a lot of backlashes from the many scandals the company has been involved in over the past few months. The game company has been involved in a series of lawsuits regarding sexual misconduct and discrimination at the workplace.

One of the more recent scandals to rock the company is the apparent involvement of CEO Bobby Kotick in covering up these crimes. Outrage amongst the gaming community and Blizzard employees has even prompted a large-scale petition to remove Kotick from his position as CEO.

With so many scandals and lawsuits being filed against Activision Blizzard, their reputation has taken a beating. It is possible that an individual, or more likely a group, is fed up with Blizzard’s situation and is trying to seek justice in its own way by targeting Blizzard directly. This is not the first time the company has been under a large-scale DDoS attack. Something similar happened back in 2019 when Blizzard launched World of Warcraft Classic when a group of hackers targeted the game's servers with similar results.

Activision Blizzard has since restored its services but has not released any information on who might the hackers be and why the attack might have been done.
