100 Thieves is Developing a Video Game

in Industry
May 23, 2022
  • The organization is inspired by titles like Gears of War, and both Halo 2 and Halo 3
  • 100 Thieves want feedback from professional gamers and its fans during production
  • It might take a lot of time before production starts, as the organization builds a team

Popular esports organization 100 Thieves has decided on the next step in its growth and it announced it will be making a video game.

100 Thieves Is Making a Game

Esports organizations have far outgrown their initial purpose of sponsoring and training teams to compete in various video game tournaments. Some have created branches that hire various content creators to further popularize the brand. Other organizations sell various types of merchandise to fans.

However, sometimes esports organizations decide to enter the gaming market not just as users of a product, but as producers as well. Such is the case for 100 Thieves, which is developing its own video game, codenamed Project X.

At this point we know almost nothing of the project, however, the organization has revealed some titles which will serve as inspiration for the product. These include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Gears of War, and both Halo 2 and Halo 3, strongly inferring 100 Thieves’ game will be some kind of sci-fi shooter.

How Will the Organization Go About Producing the Game?

100 Thieves has revealed a little bit about the way it wants to approach this project. The organization stated that it would like to have a lot of community involvement with the game, getting feedback and recommendations from fans. Another important aspect of the production that 100 Thieves postulated is that it wants to work together with pro players and livestreamers, taking their input and putting it into the game as it's made. It’s not known what the mechanisms to achieve this would be, but other games from indie studios have had large community involvement in their development and have ultimately turned out great.

The idea to work with the organization’s many talents is, at least on paper, very good. Boasting successful teams for games including VALORANT, Fortnite, and Apex Legends, and also employing more than 20 professional streamers, 100 Thieves has a diverse cast of talents from which the organization can source feedback.

The organization’s founder and CEO Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag said that this is the biggest announcement since 100 Thieves was founded in 2017. According to him, the development of Project X is the next step in the organization pushing itself in its development.

However, despite the optimism, creating the game will not be easy, especially considering the organization seems to want to match the quality of the titles it was inspired by. It might take years before production actually starts, but perhaps with 100 Thieves promising to reach out to the community, we might learn more about the project in the near future.
