  • Apex Legends seems to have dropped in popularity over the past month
  • Many fans seem to have moved to play and watch other games
  • ImperialHal thinks this is due to the broken new Ranked matchmaking

TSM’s Philip “ImperialHal” Dosen echoes many fans’ opinion about the current staleness of Apex Legends and explains this is likely linked to its revamped Ranked play.

ImerialHal Talks About Apex’s Current State

Sometimes games have a period when they are not as popular as they used to be, and it seems like this is the case currently with Apex Legends. At least this is what TSM star Philip “ImperialHal” Dosen, and many other players, think is currently happening to the popular battle royal FPS, as a lot of fans seem to have left the game for other titles recently.

Many fans think this is because the game is in a period before a big new update and the current state of it has become a bit stale. Developers Respawn Entertainment haven’t added much to the game, barring the large update of Ranked play they launched last month. Despite the competitive system being reworked just a few weeks ago, it seems it has already become somewhat boring.

These sentiments have been echoed by Dosen as in a recent stream he gave some reasons as to why he thinks the game has dropped off a little bit. He explained that Respawn Entertainment have not given enough attention to the Ranked mode of the game, despite revamping its system recently. “I feel like they (Respawn) just think that ‘ok, we’re just catering to casuals and then we’re just going to make the content so bland that nobody can stream the game,’” the TSM pro said.

Dosen also said that Apex is in the “worst state it’s ever been” given the issues with the new Ranked system and the fact he is often matched up with and against very low-skilled players. According to him, this makes Ranked imbalanced and uninteresting, therefore no one wants to watch people play the mode, contributing to the fall of popularity the game has been seeing recently.

“It’s actually insane how hard comp Apex carries the game it feels like when it comes to viewership,” the 24-year-old player explained. “If we didn’t have comp Apex, this game, I don’t even know.” According to Dosen, this is one of the main reasons why many content creators have started playing other games, which contributes to the drop in the popularity of Apex. The game had a huge 13% drop in active players in April, according to Steam Charts. Over the past month, the player count has not climbed back to the high it was in earlier months of the year, despite a big update dropping last month. If Respawn doesn’t add something new in the coming weeks, it’s likely these stagnant player numbers would remain still.
