  • The series is part of Riot’s new format for competitive League of Legends
  • It was announced earlier this year and will be held in Korea in October
  • It will see two teams from the LCS and LEC’s fourth seeds duke it out for a spot at Worlds

Worlds 2023 Qualifying will see Golden Guardians from the LCS and Team BDS from LEC fight for the final slot in the biggest League of Legends tournament of the year.

The New Event Is Soon to Be Held

Riot Games seems to always want to make changes to the formats of their League of Legends competitive events in order to improve their quality. This is why at the start of 2023, the company noted that it wanted to strike the right balance between updating its esports ecosystem and building on reliable traditions and institutions that have already been present for years.

Because of this, Riot introduced the Worlds Qualifying Series this year, with other parts of the yearly circuit changing their format somewhat. “While the LCK and LPL will maintain their fourth seeds seed for 2023 due to their performance over the last two years, the LEC and LCS No. 4 seeds will play each other in a best-of-5 series, with the winner advancing to Worlds,” Riot said.

This means that Worlds 2023 is returning to South Korea and will start on October 9, right before Worlds kicks off. At first, Riot Games planned to host the series in North America, however, it was eventually decided to move it to South Korea. This was done in order to give the two potential teams as much time as possible to practice and prepare, as well as to help minimize travel before the Play-Ins.

This time teams will be playing in a revamped format starting with a Swiss format after the Play-In stage. Riot Games will also host the Worlds 2023 Qualifying Series (WQS), which will feature at least one team from the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) and the League of Legends EMEA [Europe, Middle East & Africa] Championship (LEC).

Riot plans to expand this series to include teams from other regions in the future, however, for now only these two regions will produce a team to fight for a final spot at Worlds 2023. Currently, Golden Guardians from the LCS’ 4th seed and Team BDS from LEC’s corresponding seed will be going head-to-head in this exciting series.
