The Entertainment Software Association Canceled E3 2022, Preferring to Focus on E3 2023

in Gaming
April 3, 2022
  • The Entertainment Software Association has finally spoken about this year’s edition of the Electronics Entertainment Expo
  • The expo will not be replaced by a digital event and will instead be canceled, ESA confirmed in an email
  • The Association announced that it plans to dedicate all its resources to hosting a better E3 in 2023

The Entertainment Software Association announced the cancelation of the Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3) for 2022. The event will return “reinvigorated” in 2023.

ESA Has Given Up on Hosting an E3 Event in 2022

The 2022 edition of the Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3), a famous gaming event is where numerous developers get to showcase their upcoming titles, has been canceled. The news has been confirmed by numerous reputable sources.

Since 1995, E3 has been one of the most anticipated annual events for gamers and game developers. The COVID-19 pandemic had forced the Entertainment Software Association to cancel the 2020 expo and subsequently adopt a digital-only format for the 2021 event. Many believed that the 2022 edition of the E3 would also take place online. However, it turns out that the Association has scrapped those plans, instead opting to cancel the event.

For the remainder of the year, video game companies will have to rely on their own marketing efforts to reveal more about their upcoming titles. Many will likely participate in other conventions, similar to E3.

Excited to share that @SummerGameFest will return this June with a slate of events. We'll be producing another Kickoff Live show with announcements, news and first looks.

The Summer Game Fest, hosted by Geoff Keighley, is likely going to be one of the alternatives developers will pick.

E3 Will Return in 2023

Although this year’s edition of E3 is canceled, this is not the last we will be hearing of the expo. According to an email sent out to partners of the Entertainment Software Association, E3 will return “reinvigorated” in 2023. The Association promised to once again promote new video games and celebrate industry innovations.

The email confirmed that the reason for the cancelation of E3 is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Entertainment Software Association explained that it plans to not waste resources on a digital event and instead focus all its efforts on E3 2023.

The Association promised that the next E3 will have both an in-person and digital portion. The former is set to take place in Los Angeles in the summer of 2023.
