  • The issue should be fixed with the release of Patch 14.11 next week
  • Riot plans to adjust the values and gold of turrets to discourage players from lane swapping

LoL’s Mid-Seasonal Invitational 2024 showed some areas that need improvement and the excessive lane swapping is one of them.

Phroxzon Talks About Lane Swapping

League of Legends is popular for having three lanes and different types of champions that excel at playing in each one. Of course, this does not mean that players can’t move in between said lanes at different points in the game. In fact, this is often needed for a team to get a strategic advantage over their opponents. This is called lane swapping and it has been quite popular in the LoL meta in recent times. However, Riot Games plans to implement various mechanisms to discourage players from doing so in the upcoming Patch 14.11.

The news comes from a recent post by lead League of Legends gameplay designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison where he talked about the changes that the new patch will implement. Lane swapping is in Riot’s sights after the practice had gotten quite popular before and during the recent LoL Mid-Seasonal Invitational.

According to Phroxzon, while lane swapping is a natural part of the game and is often needed, it can get frustrating to see it in every game. “While we think some of this was teams adapting to player matchup diffs over time, in some cases, it’s more optimal than we’d like (eg. double ranged bot lanes),” he said. He additionally explained that while some swaps here and there can be interesting for a viewer, having this every game is too much.

Almost every single match at MSI 2024 in Chengdu featured a lane swap, where League players avoid a challenging head-to-head matchup by swapping to another lane for the opening few minion waves. This allowed ADCs to secure enough gold and levels to survive an otherwise oppressive start to a match.

How Will Riot Address the Issue?

It seems like the way to fix the problem with lane swapping is to simply adjust the defense values of the first turrets in the lanes. Additionally, the amount of gold they give upon destruction will also be changed. It’s hoped that this will discourage players of certain champions from switching lanes.

Fixing lane swapping is not the only thing that will need some major changes that became apparent following the MSI 2024. In the same post, Phroxzon also talked about how Riot Games plans to nerf K’Sante as the champion was seen quite frequently in many of the games during the tournament.

That being said, the post was mostly just a preview of what’s being planned for LoL. As the release date of Patch 14.11 comes closer, there will likely be more details about the upcoming changes.
