G2 Esports Wins the RLCS Winter Major after Epic Showdown against Team Queso

in Gaming
March 30, 2022
  • G2 Esports triumphs over Team Queso to win the RLCS 2021-22 Winter Split Major
  • The battle was hard-fought, as Queso put up a valiant resistance
  • Team Queso was regarded as an underdog during the whole season but performed very well despite that

G2 Esports emerges victorious from their battle against Team Queso, winning the Grand Final of the Rocket League Championship Series 2021-22 Winter Split Major.

G2 and Queso Put Up Quite a Show

This Sunday saw a riveting grand finale between G2 Esports and Team Queso, who went up against each other to determine the winner of this year’s Rocket League Championship Series 2021-22 Winter Split Major. The result of the showdown was a decisive win for G2 Esports.

Winning five straight matches through the lower bracket, Team Queso managed to reach the final. However, as a lower bracket champion, the team had to beat upper-bracket challenger G2 twice in a best-of-seven to claim the title. Queso started strong winning the first set 4-3, with just seconds remaining in game seven of the first match. This set up a winner takes all best of seven match.

At this point, G2 had enough and took this second game 4-2. Being careful not to commit the same mistakes that cost them the first march, G2 got their stuff together and emerged victorious, winning the $90,000 first prize along with 701 RLCS Circuit ranking points. Queso pocketed $60,000 and 600 points.

A Closer Look at the Runner-up

Team Queso was somewhat of an underdog. Not many thought the team would do this well given they are a relatively new team in the very top levels of competition. That being said, Queso is still the top-ranked European team. They dominated the Spring Split in Europe, but during the previous Split to see they were barely a team considered a threat in the region. However, they proved their critics wrong on this event, which was their first major LAN. Curiously, viewers could watch the event within Fortnite, thanks to a new collaboration between Psyonix and Epic Games.

Losing out to Version1 for the top spot in their group stage, Queso was put in the lower bracket. However, the team still performed spectacularly, which eventually led them to the Finals. On their way there, Queso defeated General NRG, a team many favored to win the entire tournament at the start of the week. Queso’s next victim were Evil Geniuses, defeated 3-0, followed by Furia, ending with a very contested 4-3.

Team Queso eventually knocked out FaZe Clan (4-1) and had to face the final lower bracket challenger Spacestation Gaming. The match between the two was intense, but Queso somehow pulled through.

Queso may have not been able to win the major, however, they still broke everyone’s expectations throughout the series.
