Copenhagen Games 2023 Are Postponed Indefinitely

in Gaming
February 1, 2023
  • The popular Danish CS:GO event will not be returning this year
  • Organizers cite a lack of sponsors as the main reason for this decision
  • The last Copenhagen games were held way back in 2019

Despite attempts to keep the Copenhagen games alive using LAN during the pandemic, they will not be returning this year due to a lack of sponsors.

Copenhagen Games Indefinitely Postponed

The Covid-19 pandemic was a double-edged sword for the world of esports. On the one hand, because many people were cooped up inside with not much to do, many decided to watch esports tournaments, resulting in the rise in popularity of professional CS:GO. In fact, that trend is still keeping, with CS:GO almost reaching mid-pandemic levels of popularity on Steam.

But on the other hand, some competitive events saw a sharp decline when they had to be canceled due to the pandemic restrictions. The Copenhagen games are such one event, with the last tournament taking place way back in 2019. But as the world s finally emerging from the pandemic and restrictions are being lifted, the signature Danish event will unfortunately not be returning.

The Copenhagen games’ organizers have recently announced that the event has been postponed indefinitely. This year’s tournament will not be held with the organizers citing the inability to find enough commercial and financial support from sponsors and exhibitors as the main reason for this decision.

Sadly, due to financial issues, we won’t be able to make Copenhagen Games 2023 happen.

This doesn’t mean that we are shit down permanently, but are on pause for the time being.
We will continue to fight for the event, but only time can tell if it will happen.

Troubles for the Copenhagen games started back in 2020 with the first wave of Covid restrictions. The tournament, like many similar ones, was canceled but was not relegated to online play, as many other events did. Instead, the organizers tried to revive the tournament upon the return of LANs in 2022, but that attempt was cut short due to budgetary concerns and a lack of sponsors, the same reason this year’s Copenhagen games were indefinitely postponed.

Will the Event Ever Return?

Despite the cancellation of the 2023 iteration of the tournament, the organizers said they are not out of the picture just yet. “There still is a huge interest from players all over the world for the event, and the City of Copenhagen is still supporting the event financially,” the tournament organizers said in a statement.

2019 was the last year the Danish CS:GO event took place, with forZe earning the top spot. The Copenhagen games always began with BYOC tournament in which a multitude of players and notable talent would compete in hopes of making the main tournament, whose prize pool often reached the tens of thousands.

Running since 2010, the Copenhagen games served as a stepping stone for many Danish and international talents. Only time will tell if the games will once again provide the crucial step into the higher CS:GO competitive ecosystem.
