Capcom Reveals Many Exciting Street Fighter 6 Features and Gameplay

in Gaming
June 7, 2022
  • The game has been confirmed for next year, although there is still no specific date announced
  • SF6 will feature many new and old characters as well as classic game modes
  • It will also have a new open-world singleplayer experience and real-time fighting commentary

Capcom revealed at Sony’s State of Play presentation that Street Fighter 6 is coming next year with a ton of exciting new game modes, and singleplayer and multiplayer features.

SF6 Comes with Many New Features

Fighting game fans have been eagerly awaiting new information on Capcom’s newest addition to the Street Fighter franchise. Although the company teased Street Fighter 6 earlier this year, Capcom just recently showed the first trailer for the game and confirmed it is coming in 2023.

“Powered by Capcom's proprietary RE Engine, Street Fighter 6 spans three distinct game modes, including Fighting Ground, World Tour, and Battle Hub,” said Capcom at their presentation at Sony’s State of Play presentation on Thursday. Although the company did not mention a specific date for the game’s release, it promised innovative new gameplay features and “enhanced visuals for every aspect of the game.”

The game will see the return of many veterans like Ryu and Chun-Li, as well as the final addition to the Street Fighter 5 roster Luke, and the new expert breakdancer / drunken boxer Jamie. Capcom promises that players will have a wide range of fighting styles and skills to master.

Street Fighter 6 will also feature a new optional control type with “simplified inputs”. The game will also have what Capcom calls a Drive System, “a new gauge used to perform five distinct techniques that enhance a player’s offensive or defensive capabilities”.

The new Street Fighter title also includes several new game modes, the first of which is called Fighting Grounds. It focuses on the classic fighting game experience with modes from previous games in the series, such as Arcade, online matches, Training, local versus, and others.

The next game mode added to the game is the so-called Battle Hub. It aims to “further expand the scope of player communication and engagement.” Perhaps this means that Capcom wants to overhaul its online systems and looking to make Street Fighter more of a communications hub, where players can do more than just play one style of match.

But perhaps the biggest surprise when it comes to game modes is the World Tour. It is “an immersive single-player story experience” that “pushes the boundaries of what a fighting game is and allows players to leave their own legacy with their player avatar”. The gameplay trailer showed players walking around different game locations, namely Metro City, talking with NPCs, getting into fights, and generally interacting with the environment.

Finally, Street Fighter 6 will also feature real-time in-game commentary, just like in real-life sports. Capcom revealed with another trailer that the voice lines included English commentary from Jeremy “Vicious” Lopez and Japanese commentary from Aru.

“We’re working with well-known talent from the fighting game community to incorporate their voices directly in the game,” Capcom said. “Feel the excitement of competing in a tournament from the comfort of your own home.”

Capcom also confirmed that the franchise will come back to Xbox with the launch of SF6. There are also plans to launch on PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam next year.
