Apple Is Reportedly Developing an AR/VR Headset. Here is What We Know

in Gaming
December 9, 2021
  • Apple is allegedly entering the AR/VR scene with a new headset project
  • The tech giant aims to create a universal product that is suitable for all AR/VR needs
  • It is expected to release in late 2022 or early 2023 and will probably cost a lot

Apple is reportedly entering the AR/VR field with a new powerful headset project, scheduled for a 2022-2023 release.

Apple’s Headset to Have a Mac-Level Power

With Apple allegedly developing a virtual augmented reality/virtual reality headset, many industry specialists are already speculating about the details and tech giant’s future developments in the realm of AR/VR. Currently, not much is known about the company’s project other than a rough release date for somewhere between 2022 and 2023.

The Apple AR/VR headset is described to have a mac-level computing power by the Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo shared quite a few details about the incoming projects, informing investors of what to expect.

He explained that the headset will probably have around 8 gigabytes of RAM, a 256 gigabytes hard drive, and will support a 6E wireless connection, making it as powerful as many computers. This power will be used for both augmented and virtual reality gaming, video conversations, and video streaming, making the product a universal item with various intended functions beyond just gaming.

This will put Apple’s AR/VR headset a big step ahead of its competitors, which are usually excelling in a single task but will also present a challenge for Apple’s devs.

Despite the difficulties, Kuo firmly believes that there is a high possibility of Apple, being a giant in the tech field, to revolutionize the AR/VR field and bring about a new future.

The Project Will Be Light, Comfortable and Pricey

As for further specifications, Kuo spoke about the device’s look and the materials it will be made of. According to the specialist, the headset will aim to be lightweight and comfortable, weighing less than half a kilo. To achieve this, it will use light and skin-comfortable materials.

Kuo thinks that Apple will go for 8K screens and implement several cameras that track eye movement, in order to provide a good performance for the variety of tasks the device is intended to do.

The device is still far away and divining its price is not an exact science but Kuo thinks that the AR/VR headset may cost as much as several thousand dollars.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that the headset will not be a standalone device and will instead have to be wirelessly paired with another Apple product.

Apple’s Endeavors Don’t End There

Apple’s foray into the AR/VR territory doesn’t end here as the company is also believed to be working on an augmented reality glasses project that will release at a later date.

The glasses won’t be as universal as the AR/VR headset but will be much lighter and will possibly cost less as a result. Kuo thinks that the release of the next project will not happen until 2023.

The projects are still far away and not much official news has been shared but in any case, it will be interesting to follow how Apple’s entry into the AR/VR field affects it.
