- IEM Katowice’s quarterfinalists have all been decided after yesterday’s G2vsHeroic match
- G2 consistently lost the pistol rounds but always managed to recover later in the game
- This was due to the inconsistent performance their individual players showed
After defeating Heroic 2-0 on Vertigo and Nuke, G2 Esports proceed to IEM Katowice 2024’s quarterfinals where they will go up against FaZe on Friday.
G2 Defeat Heroic
All the teams that will participate in IEM Katowice 2024’s playoffs are already set after G2 secured the last of the coveted spots. Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen’s men performed well throughout Group B of the event and bounced back after suffering an early defeat from ENCE which saw them being sent to the lower bracket. There, they defeated Monte, leading them to the lower bracket final against Heroic, whom they went up for the second time this tournament.
Interestingly, G2 were the ones who put Heroic in the lower bracket after they defeated them in the quarterfinals of Group B. This means that the last match was an opportunity for Heroic to enact revenge, but failed to do so, despite leading the pistol rounds on both maps the teams played.
Speaking of the maps, the match started on Vertigo where Heroic led the way 4-0 after denying a 1v2 clutch attempt from G2’s Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov. However, the Scandinavian team consistently found it difficult to overcome the Russian sniper once he had his AWP, which allowed G2 to post six rounds by the time the sides switched. Another pistol and conversion from Heroic after the swap did little to curb that trajectory. It was not long before G2’s Nemanja “nexa” Isaković and Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen quickly wrapped things up, giving their side a 13-9 victory.
The next map, Nuke, saw almost the same story, with Heroic dominating both halves’ pistol rounds. However, when both teams got proper main guns, the Scandinavian squad consistently failed to stop G2’s exploits. Nikola “NiKo” Kovač found gaps to flank into Ramp, a tactic he used for the rest of the map. It wasn’t long before G2 secured the map with a 13-8 and won the match 2-0 to qualify for the IEM Katowice Playoffs.
How Both Teams Performed
Despite the loss, Heroic still made a decent final game, although they could not enact their revenge. They were initially defeated by G2 in Group B’s Upper Bracket Quarterfinals in an even closer match and then had to go through several teams to have their rematch against G2. On their way to it, Heroic eliminated GamerLegion, one of the underdogs of the tournament that surprised everybody with their resilience.
Meanwhile, G2, being the champions of last year’s IEM Katowice, were considered favorites this year as well. However, they suffered some early losses, which dropped them to the lower bracket of Group B. During the match against Heroic, Nemanja “huNter-” Kovač’s overall level remained worrying for a team who are looking to defend their title in Poland. To do so, G2 must find more consistency throughout the entire squad if they want to find success in their upcoming quarterfinal match against FaZe on Friday.
