Street Fighter 6 Is Evo’s Biggest Game, despite Not Even Being Out Yet

in FGC
April 10, 2023
  • Registration for this year’s Evo Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament is in full swing
  • Street Fighter 6 is currently the most-registered game for the event
  • Early registration this year is up by nearly double compared to the same period in 2022

Street Fighter 6 is going to be released in early June, but fans are already registering en masse for Evo’s UFGT 2023, with the game surpassing last year’s top title.

SF6 Registration Is in Full Swing

Street Fighter has been a staple of the fighting game genre ever since its first iteration hit the market in 1987. Street Fighter 6 is just the latest in a long line of successful games from the franchise, and it is set to shake up the fighter scene when it’s released on June 2.

The game is going to be a crucial part of one of the biggest fighting game events in the world, Evo, and it looks like it has already become the main title to be featured. Registration for the event, which is going to be held between August 4 and August 6 in Las Vegas, has already concluded, meaning a majority of players have already locked in their participation. This lets the Evo team share some information about which games are getting the most attention from fans, and it looks like SF6 is already at the leading spot.

#Evo2023 End of Early-Bird Registration

1) Street Fighter 6
2) Guilty Gear -Strive-
3) TEKKEN 7
4) Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
5) DRAGON BALL FighterZ

Registration for Evo’s Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament 2023 does not end until July 9th, so we won’t know the actual numbers until that finishes.

Evo’s Popularity Has Grown Immensely

Perhaps it should not be surprising that SF6 has so many participants already signed up for it. Not only is the game the latest iteration of one of the most popular fighting game genres of all time, but Capcom also recently announced the 2023 Capcom Pro Tour. The event will feature a $2 million prize pool, adding to the hype surrounding the game.

Despite all the hype, SF6 is not going to be without competition when it comes o popularity. What stands out from the list posted by Evo is that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 rounds out the top four in its first year back on the stage since 2016. Additionally, Guilty Gear Strive is currently at the second spot on the list. Last year, GGS was the top title with 2 158 participants, followed by Street Fighter V at 1 324.

That being said, according to Evo general manager Rick “TheHadou” Thiher, last year’s numbers are quite small because the early registration this year is up by nearly double. We can extrapolate from this comment that SF6 will surpass GGS’s record from 2022.

Evo is shaping up to be gigantic this year with the close of early reg showing a 2x increase over our 2022 early reg totals. It’s a truly marvelous time to be into fighting games. https://t.co/FSx358JOzC

Evo had taken some serious blows due to the Covid-19 pandemic over the past few years. But it seems like the UFGT has finally returned in full force. Although we will have to wait more to see the final numbers of participants, it’s highly likely 2023 will pass last year’s event in all metrics.
