  • Fortnite’s creator, Epic Games, is trying to diversify its content portfolio and branches out to other types of media
  • The company has created a new entertainment division, focused on media production
  • Recently hired staff suggest the company might start working on a feature lengths film

It seems we might be seeing Fortnite on the big screen soon, as recent reports suggest that Epic Games will be developing a movie.

A Fortnite Movie Is Coming to Theaters, Or Is It?

Epic Games is trying to sail its flagship Fortnite into new territories, and it seems after their recent legal issues with Apple, players won’t be seeing the game on iOS devices anytime soon. This, in addition to the many lawsuits Epic is currently engaged with Google, might be some of the reasons why the company is going to try its luck in other areas, namely the film sector.

In a report from The Information, it becomes clear that Epic Games will try and branch out into other industries in an effort to diversify. According to the report by Matthew Olson and Jessica Toonkel, the company is hiring several Lucasfilm executives who were involved in the “Star Wars” franchise.

Olson’s tweet says that perhaps in the future we might see TV off spins connected to the game and that a full-length movie has been discussed. Recently Epic has hired names like Lucasfilm’s Jason McGatlin, who was an executive producer for all of Disney’s Star Wars films, as well as two other former Lucasfilm employees.

Epic Games’ New Entertainment Division

Olson and Toonkel’s sources claim that Epic Games is “considering launching an entertainment division focused on scripted video programming.”

There seems to be a trend recently of videogame companies trying to diversify their products in other areas, such as film and TV. As pointed out by some analysts, Epic is following in the footsteps of other game companies, such as Riot Games, who late last month revealed a new Netflix TV series, set in the world of League of Legends.

While is still early to say anything with 100% certainty, Olson and Toonkel’s sources do talk about “The division could develop projects including a feature film based on Fortnite.” However, this suggests that the division might also focus on other projects such as TV or short web videos.

In conclusion, Epic Games’ recent hires suggest there is something going on behind the scenes.
