  • It is the first Major to be held live since 2020
  • The event will feature 18 teams from all around the world
  • Teams will compete for a prize pool of half a million dollars

After almost two years of the lack of live events, the Dota 2 ESL Stockholm Major will be an opportunity for fans to finally see their favorite teams perform live.

The Event Will Be Held in May

With the world finally starting to open up again, live esports events are being announced and will hopefully be held in the upcoming months. One such is Dota 2’s ESL Stockholm Major which will be held in spring in Hovet Arena in the Swedish capital. The event, which will run from May 12 to 22 and feature 18 teams, is going to be the culminating final of the 2022 DPC’s Spring Tour.

The event’s grand final will be held between May 20 and May 22. With tickets going on sale from February 17, fans will have the opportunity to attend a live Dota 2 Major with a crowd for the first time since 2020.

The event also marks a return of the ESL Majors back to Sweden, as last year’s The International 10 had to be delayed to October and moved to Bucharest, Romania. The reason for this unforeseen move was a conflict between the Swedish government and the Swedish Sports Federation. The problem, in particular, revolved around esports and its classification within the country last June.

Here Are Some More Details

The Major will feature 18 of the world’s best Dota 2 teams from each Region’s Division I bracket. Each region (China, Eastern Europe, North America, South America, Southeast Asia, and Western Europe) has two or four slots available. These teams will compete for a total prize pool of $500,000 and 3,530 DPC points. Valve is keen to continue its initial plan to up the number of DPC points available in each Major. Teams will have to earn them in order to qualify for the renowned The International (TI) 11.

The group stage will use a best-of-2 round-robin format. It will see the 18 teams split into two groups of equal numbers and will take place in a studio environment. The top six teams from each stage will advance to the double-elimination playoff stage, where the teams will compete in front of the live crowd.

Artem Bykov, General Manager, Game Management at ESL Gaming said that he is excited Dota 2 fans will again be able to attend live events after an almost two-year pause. “Organizing a Major is always special, but with so much at stake right now, ESL One Stockholm will simply be awesome. We can’t wait for it to get started!”

May is still some time away and with Valve releasing the Dota 2 7.31 Patch, we might see more changes before the Major comes. Whatever the case may be, fans are surely excited to finally be able to witness their favorite teams live.
