Diablo II: Resurrected got cross-progression confirmed for all platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.
Cross-Progression Confirmed
Diablo II: Resurrected’s release is in less than ten days. The long-awaited remake of the timeless classic will breathe new life into the epic dark fantasy adventure. As times have changed in the past 21 years since the original game’s release in 2000, Diablo II: Resurrected will get some modern quality of life changes to better suit the contemporary market. One of them is cross-progression.
Cross progression for Diablo II: Resurrected was confirmed to allow the transfer of player data between PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One and X/S. The character will tie into the Battle.net account.
Cross-progression means that players who used more than a single device type will keep their character data and progression throughout all devices. This, needless to say, is a tremendous boon to people with several devices who would like to play with different groups on different platforms, for example (since the game will not feature crossplay, at least for now).
People will also have the unique opportunity to switch between stationary play and portable experience if they own a Nintendo Switch. The lack of news about the Nintendo Switch release recently sparked some concerns among the community but there hasn’t been any news about a potential delay yet.
And Yet, Cross-Progression Doesn’t Equal Crossplay
Cross-progression talks almost always spark a logical related question – Will Diablo 2: Resurrected have crossplay? Sadly, the answer is no, at least currently. The game will release with no option for consoles to connect and play together.
Still, there is hope on the horizon as Blizzard never ruled out the possibility of implementing crossplay at a later date. Quite on the contrary, the company itself confirmed that crossplay is a possible feature that may come to the game, albeit at a later date.
Even with no crossplay yet, the reveal of the cross-progression function is a welcome one. Although more indirectly, it will allow users to connect across various platforms and share the experiences Diablo II has to offer.
Veteran fans of the game did consider some of the Diablo II: Resurrected changes to be a bit jarring, with people pointing out some of the heroes’ redesigns, the lack of leaderboard at release, and the lack of any in-game communication methods may seriously hinder the experience. Still, it is early to be said for sure.
The game comes out on Thursday, September 23.
