Report: Valve to Host CS:GO Majors in 2022 and 2023 in Structured Format

in Counter Strike
May 26, 2021
  • Valve Corporation plans to organize Major events for CS: GO in 2022 and 2023.
  • Valve has set dates for receiving submissions from tournament organizers for Major spots or the RMR events.
  • The company makes its comeback to a Major-centric CS: GO scene.

Valve has long kept a distance from centralizing the CS:GO professional circuit, but this is now coming to an end with the publisher and developer looking to create a more structured competitive season akin to the DPC.  The news was first published in an HLTV report.

Valve Plans to Open Proposals for 4 Major CS: GO Events

Valve will hold one Major event in May and another one in November in 2022 and 2023. The company intends to host the Major events in late May and in early November. These tentative plans also include a Regional Major Ranking tournament (RMR) in Europe, CIS, North America, South America, and Asia/Oceania before the Major events. Valve will organize the RMR events in early April and late September dates. The number of spots reflects the number of teams from each region from the Berlin Major in 2019. Valve will accept submissions from interested tournament organizers for the Major spots or the RMR events.

Tournament organizers can make proposals for the Major spots or RMR events in 2022 until the end of June. The company will accept the submissions for these events in 2023 until the end of November. However, the video game developer has specified a condition which organizers should meet. The organizers interested in hosting these events should make sure they would set them in a time zone convenient for most CS: GO players. Moreover, Valve has required a specific “prime time” slot that centers around either 9 am CT or 2 pm CT. That condition isolates some parts of the gaming community. The RMR tournament will qualify twenty-four teams who will participate in the Major events.

Valve has returned to a Major-focused CS: GO community.

The company will start its comeback with a Major event in the PGL Stockholm from October 23 to November 7. The prize for that Major will be $2 million, the highest in CS: GO history. The prize pool has increased in comparison to the previous Majors, where the winners got $1,000,000. That will be the first physical Major since the StarLadder Berlin Major, which ended in September 2019. Astralis was the team that won the championship in Berlin in 2019.
