PGL Announces First-Ever Counter-Strike 2 Major in Copenhagen

in Counter Strike
March 28, 2023
  • The event will be held in March next year in the Danish capital
  • It will be hosted in the renowned Royal Arena
  • It will see the world’s best 24 CS teams compete for the $1 250 000 prize pool

PGL Copenhagen Major will be the first-ever Counter-Strike 2 tournament after this spring’s Blast Premier Paris Major becomes the last CS:GO event to be played.

PGL Announces First CS2 Major

Popular esports tournament organizer PGL announced they will be hosting the first official Counter-Strike 2 tournament in Copenhagen next year’s spring. “We proudly announce that we will host another Major of one of the most thriving esports franchises of all time: Counter-Strike,” PGL’s announcement reads.

The tournament will be held in the Royal Arena, one of the world's most modern and prestigious indoor arenas. It will take place in 2024 between March 17 and March 31 in the Danish capital and will feature the world's top 24 Counter-Strike 2 teams competing for a piece of the $1 250 000 prize pool.

“One of the greatest games of all time is marching to another chapter, and we couldn't be happier to host probably the most important Major of the franchise in recent years,” said PGL’s CEO Silviu Stroie, reminding of Denmark’s rich history in esports heritage. He also outlined the goals for the Major, saying the PGL’s ambition is to break the game's all-time viewership records.

The announcement of the tournament comes just days after Valve finally revealed Counter-Strike 2. The game will be a free overhaul of CS:GO in a similar vein to what Blizzard did with Overwatch and its successor. CS2 will be released sometime in the summer, which made many ask the question of what will happen with the current CS:GO competitive circuit. Their questions were answered when the official Counter-Strike 2 Twitter account announced that the upcoming BLAST Paris Major, which is set to run on May 8-21, will be the final CS:GO Major ever.

The Paris Major will be the final CS:GO Major.

The following Major will be in March 2024 and the first in Counter-Strike 2.

Following the French event, fans of competitive CS will have to wait until March of next year for the next CS Major organized by PGL. The Romanian organization already has multiple successful CS:GO events under its belt, including the PGL Major Stockholm in 2021, which was the most-watched CS:GO tournament of all time, and the PGL CS:GO Major Antwerp 2022 – the largest indoor esports event ever.

PGL CS2 Major Copenhagen 2024 will be the fourth Major overall and the third since 2021 organized by the organization. It will also be the first CS Major hosted in Denmark, so fans will have a lot to be looking forward to in the coming year.
