With more than 100 million monthly players, League of Legends is by far one of the most popular video games in the world. The game pits two teams of five players against each other in a classic three-lane MOBA map. Both sides have to fight for dominance using a variety of champions. It’s safe to say that the large number of League of Legends champions is one of the main driving forces for the game’s popularity. They are all rather unique and you can easily find some that fit your play style and aesthetic preferences.

However, over the decade and a half since the game was released, developers Riot Game have added numerous new characters. Even if you’re a veteran player, you might be wondering how many League of Legends champions there are. In this article, we will answer that question, along with some other details about LoL’s extensive roster.

How Many Champions Are In League of Legends?

There are currently 168 champions in League of Legends, the latest addition to this growing list being Smolder, the Fiery Fledgling, who hit the live servers in Patch 14.3. The young dragon is a physical damage dealer, mainly played as a marksman. He is quite strong in the late game thanks to his stacking mechanic and is capable of dealing incredible AoE damage in the team fights.

How Many Champions Are In Each League of Legends Class?

All of these champions can be further divided into six main categories and it’s also interesting to see the distribution they are in. It should also be noted that many of these characters fall into two or more different classes. For example, the previously mentioned Smolder is a Marksman and a Mage. LoL’s classes are:

  • Bruisers – Also known as fighters, these characters offer the best combination of damage and survivability. Right now, there are 70 bruisers in League of Legends. This makes them by far the most numerous League of Legends champion type in the game.
  • Assassins – There are 42 champions in League of Legends of this class. They deal massive damage to singular targets, making them the best class to take out enemy players.
  • Mages – There are a total of 62 Mage Champions in League of Legends. Mages maximize their damage with the usage of their abilities and spells.
  • Marksmen – These champions have massive damage potential and deal damage from a distance but they also lack quite a bit of defense. There are 30 marksmen champions in League of Legends right now.
  • Tanks – A lot of bruisers also fall in this class. There are currently 45 tank champions in League of Legends. They sport great defense and lots of health and offer great crowd-controlling abilities, which allow you to protect your allies or pin down enemies for them to kill.
  • Supports – These champions heal their teammates, provide shielding from enemies, and grant extra damage to allies. They are usually squishy but have powerful tools to protect themselves and their own team. Right now, there are 36 support champions in League of Legends.

Here Are Some More Frequently Asked Questions about LoL’s Champions

While there are currently 168 unique champions in the game, this number obviously wasn’t the same initially. Since LoL’s first tests in 2009, Riot Games has been steadily adding new characters to the game. With this being the case, many fans have been wondering about the following questions:

  • How many champions were part of LoL’s Alpha Stage? – This very early version of the game was started in early 2009 and it had a tiny roster of just 17 champions.
  • How many champions were released in LoL’s Beta Stage? – With the very first version of the game proving successful, Riot Games proceeded onto the beta which saw 23 more champions added. This brought the total number of League of Legends champions to 40. The full game also launched with this number of champions on October 27, 2009.
  • In which year were the most League of Legends champions released? – Riot Games released a total of 26 champions in 2011. The second-highest was the following year, with 24 unique champions released in 2012.

Since its very early days, Riot has slowed down the release of new champions. However, the devs are now often concentrating on reworking older characters, giving new life to those who are not as popular or have older kits. Smolder is the first champion released in 2024, but there will likely be three or four more this year.
