  • Creative Assembly has heard fans’ demands and has completely reworked the siege experience
  • Sieges will now be a much more exciting and unique experience with numerous new maps
  • The addition of a “supplies” resource will add an element of resource management and will let people build temporary structures

After being neglected in the first two entries in the franchise, siege battles are about to get much more exciting with the release of Total War: Warhammer 3.

Making the Unexciting Exciting

Siege battles in Total War: Warhammer is finally getting some love with the release of the third title in the franchise. Fans who have requested a siege rework for years can rejoice as Creative Assembly detailed the exciting changes coming to the game.

Previously players didn’t like siege battles a lot, because they tended to be bland and unexciting. A siege battle was primarily focused on the walls and didn’t include much strategizing. Because of this, most players largely prefer the open field clashes where they can freely put their tactical minds to use to put their units into clever positions and get an advantage over the enemy.

Yesterday, the game studio released a blog post where it explained the numerous changes that will make siege battles much more exciting than they ever were. Creative Assembly also released an accompanying video that showcases the changes and features Grand Cathay – one of the new races coming in Total War: Warhammer 3.

Both the blog and the video talk about the numerous changes that will make sieges more dynamic, exciting, and strategic.

The New Siege Mechanics

One of the most exciting news is that more maps will be making their way to the game. The developers will finally add siege map variety with maps that correspond to the culture of the various playable races.

A new resource will be added, making siege battles not merely about army attrition but adding an element of resource management as well. The so-called “supplies” will be a limited resource that is used by defenders to bolster their defenses and build temporary fortifications, traps, and towers. This will reinforce the idea of a layered defense, as the defending party will now be able to block streets and make it harder for attackers to advance.

Structures built using supplies can be dismantled for a refund in supply but if they are destroyed or captured by the enemy, the supplies are lost forever. Luckily, defenders can gain more of that precious resource by guarding several strategic points inside the city.

Furthermore, CA is doubling down on this idea of layered defenses by designing maps with more bridges, choke points, open areas with adjacent ambush locations, and vantage points for ranged units. The latter will have a docking option that provides archers with the same boons as the city walls.

Creative Assembly’s main focus is to make sieges an exciting and dynamic experience instead of a chore. The new siege battles mechanics will add a layer of tactical play, resource management, and real-time reorganization and adaptability.

Total War: Warhammer 3 will be the last entry to the exciting epic fantasy strategy franchise. It is set for release in early 2022.
